Stoupa Messinia is a settlement that belongs to the Municipality of West Mani. The Municipality of West Mani is a Municipality of the Regional Unit of Messinia, in the Peloponnese Region, which operates from 01-01-2011. It was established in 2010 with the “Kallikratis” Program, from the merger of the pre-existing Municipalities, Municipality of Avia and Municipality of Lefktro, which were established in 1997 with the “Kapodistrias” Plan. Then they were transformed into Municipal Units, the Municipal Unit of Avia, based in Kampos Avias and the Municipal Unit of Lefktro, based in Kardamili.

The Municipality of Lefktro was a municipality of the prefecture of Messinia that was established with the program “Ioannis Kapodistrias”. It had a population of 5,908 inhabitants and was the second largest in area in the prefecture of Messinia, in Exo Mani, the so-called Messinian. It consisted of 19 former communities and 43 settlements. The seat of the Municipality was Kardamili. With the implementation of the Kallikratis program, it was abolished and joined the new municipality of West Mani.

In the village of Lefktro, east of Stoupa, there is a castle that according to Pausanias was the temple of Athena with its statue. During the Frankish period the castle was rebuilt and given the name Beaufort, which means “beautiful castle”. The Prastova mine in Neo Proastio, where Nikos Kazantzakis and Alexis Zorbas worked, is also accessible to tourists. The mountain routes of Taygetos, the gorges of Byros, Noupanti and Koskarga are suitable for cycling, hiking and mountaineering. The area is developed touristically with a variety of services and activities.
